Trauma/Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Psychological Trauma is damage to the psyche as a response to a traumatic event in one’s life. This can involve a single traumatic experience, or an enduring or repeating event or events that completely overwhelm our ability to cope and integrate our ideas and emotions. Examples of these circumstances may include being exposed to death, threatened death, witnessing serious injury or violence, and repeated exposure to traumatic events. The result of traumatic event may be overwhelming, and the impact may be too difficult to overcome independently. Symptoms often range in severity and intensity, and can occur in a variety of ways.

Symptoms are often placed into four categories

Re-experiencing Symptoms

Recurrent memories of the traumatic event

Avoidance Symptoms
Avoiding specific situations and places that remind one of the traumatic event
Occurrence of a life event that has resulted in severe anxiety

Negative Cognition and Mood Symptoms
Negative alterations in cognition and mood
Distorted thoughts about the cause or consequence of the event
Feeling detached from peers
Inability to feel positive emotions

Arousal Symptoms
Difficulty sleeping
Exaggerated startle response

→ These symptoms must occur for at least one month

Abuse is commonly known as an act that intentionally causes harm to an individual. There are various types, including: physical, verbal, financial, elder and psychological. After surviving some type of abusive experience, it can be incredibly difficult to cope. Recovery may be difficult and with counselling we can aid with the healing process.
